The Jamia Mosque Committee has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a “steadfast champion of democracy, justice, and equality” whose lifelong service left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.
In a statement, the Committee lauded the late Odinga as a veteran politician and a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic process who tirelessly fought for fairness, inclusion, and reforms that strengthened governance and national unity.
“Raila Odinga was a champion of the marginalized and minority communities, consistently advocating for justice and equality,” the statement read. “His courage, conviction, and vision helped shape the country’s democratic journey and inspired generations to believe in a better, more just Kenya.”
The Committee particularly highlighted Odinga’s contribution to the recognition and protection of religious diversity in the country, noting his role in entrenching the Kadhis’ Courts in Kenya’s Constitution, a move that safeguarded the rights of Muslim citizens.
“As the Muslim community, we particularly remember Raila Odinga’s significant role in the struggle for the establishment and entrenchment of the Kadhis’ Courts in Kenya’s Constitution, a reflection of his respect for Kenya’s religious diversity and commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens,” the statement added.
The Jamia Mosque Committee extended its condolences to the Odinga family, friends, and all Kenyans mourning his passing.
“May the Almighty Allah grant his family comfort and strength during this difficult time, and may Raila Amolo Odinga’s legacy of courage, reform, and inclusivity continue to inspire our nation for generations to come,” the Committee said.
Raila Odinga, 80, passed away in India, where he had been receiving treatment.
